Glossary

In the context of GMCModel the terms below are used with the following meanings:

Calculation - a set of financial indicators (variables) which forecasts the results attained by the company in a round. It is produced by the GMCModel engine based on user input data and the rules of the simulator. The financial part of the calculation includes the sections Administrative Expenses, Income Statement, Balance Sheet, Cashflow statement and others.

GMCModel calculator (engine) - this webservice which main task is to prepare a forecasted calculation to facilitate a user trying and validating several game scenarios. Having found an optimal solution, a user can submit it in to the simulator.

Previous Period Calculation - a calculation made in GMCModel for the previous (past) quarter. When the game consists of several rounds, previous period calculation is available in all rounds but first. Establishing a link between planned (next) and previous (past) calculations increases the forecast accuracy.

Previous Period Management Report - an Excel file with results of the previous (past) quarter generated by the simulator. A user uploads this file into GMCModel, where its data is parsed: outgoing balances of the previous period become incoming balances of the planned (next) period.

Simulator - a special software used by organizers of Global Management Challenge and similar contests. The simulator defines the game scenario parameters, accepts user (team) decisions, calculation results for each round, etc.

Team - a group of GMCModel users joined together to find an optimal decision. All calculations made in a team scope are visible to and editable by all team members. Each user can consists in any number of teams. One of these teams is of Personal type with only one user which cannot leave this team. All other teams are of Group type, each user may register or join any number of Group teams.

Part 2

Variable - a separate indicator in the calculation. There are input and output variables. The values of the input variables are entered and updated by a user on the tab "Your Decision". The values of output variables are calculated by the GMCModel engine and are displayed on the tabs "Checks and Indicators" and "Forecasted Financial Statements". The input variables can be of type Assumption and Decisions. The formers are user's best guesses about variable values in the next (planned) period, a user can see but cannot change these values in the simulator, e.g. price of materials. The latter are management decisions made by a user, e.g. selling price.
